Lapping recommandations
Recommendations for LAM PLAN Lapping
MACHINE
- Isolate from dust or chips coming from another machining unit which could pollute the diamond abrasive or the lapping plate, which in turn would lead to deterioration in the surface condition of the parts.
- Cover the machine between long periods of use in order to avoid pollution.
- Periodically check the state of the abrasive dispensing apparatus: the MM809B dosage dispenser and the 815 double nozzle
PLATE
- Check the flatness of the plate every hour during lapping with the help of the flatness gauge (see Flatness gauge notice). The flatness of the plate must be between a maximum convexity of 0.02 mm and a maximal concavity of 0.01 mm.
- Adjust the lapping plate if necessary with the AUTOPLAN system (see AUTOPLAN system notice) or the DIABLOC system (see DIABLOC system notice).
- Groove the lapping plate, if necessary increase the cutting power, with the AUTOPLAN system (see AUTOPLAN system notice). The grooves are between 0.2 to 0.3 mm deep on a lay ratio of around 3 to 4 mm.
- Before each prolonged stoppage, clean the plate properly to avoid the accumulation of dirt. Clean with alcohol or petrol.
- Avoid knocks to the plate during the installation of the rings or deep scratches due to the lapping of non deburred parts. Such incidents can damage the plate and have a negative effect on its performances.
RINGS
- Only use ceramic LAM PLAN rings on NEW LAM MM plates.
- Before installing them, ensure that they have not been damaged and that there is no difference in height between their studs in order to avoid damaging the plate during the lapping cycle.
- Clean the rings periodically (once a week or before any prolonged period without use).
- Change the active part of the rings (ceramic studs mounted on an aluminium frame) when it is completely worn (see ceramic Ring notice).
ABRASIVE
- Diamond liquid: Shake the flask well before pouring the content into the MM809B dispenser and check that the dosage apparatus agitator is working properly. Incorrect stirring of the diamond liquid considerably reduces its action.
- Lubricant fluid: Use only the fluid recommended by LAM PLAN which is compatible with the diamond liquid.
ABRASIVE FILM
- The abrasive film is formed by the spray of diamond liquid and lubricant fluid.
- Keep an abrasive film that is neither too dry nor too wet to ensure a good compromise between the stock removal and respecting the flatness of the plate :
- an abrasive film that is too dry is good for stock removal, but leads to heating of the lapping plate which is harmful in respecting its flatness.
- An abrasive film that is too wet makes it possible to conserve the flatness of the plate because it prevents overheating, but limits stock removal.
ATTENTION !
The modification of the abrasive film can only be achieved by altering the lubricant fluid spraying time or intervals. The spraying of diamond liquid defined at the outset of the lapping process must on no account be modified without the authorisation of the LAM PLAN technical department.
